MIDSUMMER GRASSLANDS WALK

Saturday, July 12, 4 PM

Join us for a one-mile walk through the Griggstown Native Grassland Preserve. The pace will be leisurely and on mostly level terrain. It will last an hour or two, depending on how often we stop to take a closer look at the local flora and fauna. We will be out in the open most of the time, so wear sunglasses and/or a hat. Binoculars, cameras, and pocket guides are also good items to have with you! We will meet in the parking area for the Preserve (enter at 1091 Canal Road) in Griggstown.

Acres of native grasses have been planted here, sprinkled liberally with wildflowers. A visit last July found the Preserve abloom with brown-eyed-susans-–acres of them. We hope our timing will provide an encore of this glorious experience.

The preserve was one of two grassland habitats that were recently established through the cooperation of New Jersey Audubon and Franklin Township. A 102-acre section of the property was plowed and planted with native grasses and wildflowers designed to provide habitat for birds that require grasslands for breeding.

For further details contact Karen Linder at 609-683-0483.

Directions: From the Kingston area, take 603 (Laurel Ave) toward Rocky Hill. Cross Route 518 and continue about 3 miles along the D&R Canal on Canal Road to the sign (on your right) for the Preserve at 1091 Canal Road.
From 206: Just south of Belle Mead take 630 East (Bellemead-Griggstown Road). Turn left on 533 North and take the first right across the Delaware & Raritan Canal (Griggstown Causeway). Turn right on 632 South (Canal Road). The entrance is roughly 811 feet down on the left-hand side at 1091 Canal Road.

D&R GREENWAY PRESENTS "OUR HISTORIC LANDSCAPE"
EXHIBIT--MAY 27 to SEPTEMBER 5

“Our Historic Landscape” – Past, Present and ….. Future?,-- a photographic exhibition--, will be on view in D&R Greenway Land Trust’s Marie L. Matthews Gallery. This juxtaposition of turn-of-the-century images from The Historical Society of Princeton with those of today is the fruit of a new partnership among D&R Greenway, the Historical Society, and Princeton Photography Club (PPC). Often, the 21st-century photographers stood exactly in the footsteps of their 1908 predecessors.

Evolving seasons will bring unique change to this exhibition. Curator Jack Koeppel and PPC President Carl Geisler will hang new interpretations of the storied sites as nature alters them. Koeppel is delighted to be bringing new artists to the fore: “It has been a joy to discover and unravel mysteries of regional history with these photographers. History is still here; it’s all around us.” Historical Society of Princeton Curator Eileen Morales observes that “These 21st-Century images will be tomorrow’s archival treasures.”

This program is made possible in part by the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission through funding from the Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and the New Jersey Historical Commission/Department of State. All art is for sale, 35% of the proceeds devoted to supporting D&R Greenway’s preservation and stewardship mission.

Johnson Education Center, One Preservation Place, Princeton. “Our Historic Landscape” may be viewed during business days, 10 AM to 5 PM.

KINGSTON GREENWAYS ANNUAL MEETING/"KNOW THE BEAR FACTS"

On Thursday, May 15, 2008, Michelle Ruggiero, a wildlife biologist with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife, presented "Know the Bear Facts."

In one jam-packed hour, she educated us about the natural history and biology of bears in the Garden State and the results of past and current black bear research. She also gave us practical information on coexisting with black bears, such as steps one should follow in order to ensure that bears do not become a nuisance animal in the neighborhood.

KGA TRAILS DAY PROJECT

On the sweltering Sunday of June 1st, 2008, three determined volunteers first bent, then drove in rebar to anchor sections of the boardwalk in the Cook Natural Area. This will help prevent portions of the boardwalk from floating away during flooding. Also, overgrowth was cut back along the trail segment between the old stone bridge and the rail trail.

ABOUT KINGSTON GREENWAYS

Kingston Greenways Association aims to establish a permanent green belt around the village of
Kingston consisting of natural environments, recreational park land, agricultural and horticultural
land, wetlands, streams and ponds, and sites of historical interest. The Association further aims to preserve and create connections of green among and beyond these for walking, jogging, bicycling and horseback riding. The Association aims also to promote understanding of our local region through study and education, and to provide oversight and advocacy for open space in the Kingston area. We will work in partnership with other regional, state and national groups in pursuit of open space preservation and awareness.

KGA is looking for individuals who would like to serve as trustees. If you'd like to join us, or just want more information, please send us an email! New terms begin in May. tari@kingstongreenways.org

HOW YOU CAN HELP

** Become a member
** Become a trustee
** Join us for walks, talks, workshops, cleanups, trail building, and field trips
** Get on our mailing list
** Attend public meetings, and tell state and local officials you're concerned about overdevelopment and loss of open space
** Tree Survey! KGA has applied for a grant to study, survey and photograph trees at the newly acquired Princeton Nurseries property. To help with this we need a small volunteer team of photographers and data organizers to help with the survey. We are sure that this small team can make a big difference in the planning for the nursery lands development. If interested, click on the "Contact Us" link above.
